Atlantic County Utilities Authority Receives EPA Award for Photovoltaic System

Solar PanelsThe Atlantic County Utilities Authority recently received the Environmental Protection Agency's Pisces Award (Performance and Innovation in the State Revolving Fund Creating Environmental Success).

The Authority used a $2.1 million loan from the New Jersey Environmental Financing Program and $1.9 million in rebates from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to install a photovoltaic generating system at its wastewater treatment plant. The system went into operation in October 2005 and has generated 390,000 kW hours of electricity-the equivalent of 388 barrels of crude oil. It has also has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 660,000 pounds. Yearly energy savings are projected to be $150,000.
